How to Move Around
By car
Car is the ideal mean of transport for those who wish to visit Croatia moving from one place to another. Even though in the last years considerable progresses have been made in terms of road system development, still only one part of the country is served by high speed roads, and especially in the mountainous inland, road communications can be difficult. The majority of the road network is free, with the exception of tolls in proximity of some bridges or tunnels. To rent a car a valid driving licence and a credit card are sufficient.
By Train
Travelling through the country by train may be very uncomfortable. To move from one place to another, in fact, you must often change train and the main railway junction is in Zagreb, which is not directly connected with important destinations like Dubrovnik. In particular, there is no coast railway, therefore the use of train should be avoided by tourists who wish to skip from one sea resort to the other.
Ferry boats
To reach the island the best and often the only way is by ferry. The biggest islands are connected to the coast with frequent rides (about one every hour), while the smallest ones usually offer one connection per day. Even some inhabited rocks can be reached with private boats. In case there are accommodations available on the island, the same owner of the structure will offer you the transfer.
Tickets for ferries can be purchased at ports or in the adjacent agencies. If you travel with your car you'd better ask in advance about ferries with vehicles passage.
By Bus
Bus is the only way, beside the car, to move from one destination to the other, also on the coast, partly replacing the lack of train connections. If you wish to make use of the bus, it is useful to take into account the timetables. In Croatia buses skip the stops if they are already full, unless someone has to get off.
