The Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) Venice

Venice has been the centre of artists, and dream destination for painters and sculptors throughout the region and further than; the city reflects this at every turn in lush oil paintings, the mosaics of St. Mark's, pleasing to the eye bridges and even in the marble steps leading up from the canals into homes and onto walkways. This city is full of islands, canals and bridges. The Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) and Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto) are few historical bridges in the city.

Ponte dei Sospiri - Venezia

Ponte dei Sospiri received its name in 17th century. As the prisoners who passed through here to the prison cells, on the other side would most likely see the beautiful sight of the lagoon and freedom for the last time. However, it was only in the 19th century that it came to be called the "Bridge of Sighs". This bridge is made of white limestone and has widows with stone bars. It passes over the Rio di Palazzo to connect the old prison to the interrogation rooms of the Doge’s palace. It is designed by Antoni contino (nephew of Antonio da Ponte, designer of Rialto Bridge). It was constructed between 1600 and 1603.
