The Basilica of Saint Peter in Vatican represents one the most precious architectural works of Rome. The importance of the basilica is reflected by the mammoth size of its construction, which saw the alternated contribution of the most important artists and architects of the Italian history of the 16th and 17th century. The construction self was very long and difficult.
Started in 1506, the basilica was only consecrated in 1626 by Pope Urban 8th, and was built under the direction of characters the likes of Bramante, Raffaello, Michelangelo and Bernini (who designed the complex of the square opposite the Basilica).
A little curiosity regarding the Basilica: if entering the church you don’t get lost in the magnificence of the ceilings and naves, but concentrate on the floors instead, you will notice some plates with the names of the most famous cathedrals, Florence’s above all: the plates represent a list of all the cathedrals that could be easily contained inside of Saint Peter!
