
Reaching Paços do Conselho you meet first the Mercado do Bolhão, a beautiful iron construction which has been hosting the city food market since 1851. Here you can find all typical products of the region, with some trattorias inside serving fresh fish at a very cheap price. The market is closed on Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

Proceeding a few hundred meters along the Rua de Fernandes Tomás you get to Rua de Santa Catarina, the main pedestrian street of the Old Town, and a favorite destination for shopping.

Opposite the crossroad lies the beautiful Chapel das Almas; from here you can walk down Rua de Santa Catarinareach the church of Santo Ildefonso in Praça da Batalha, with its beautiful façade tiled with azulejos. Stop by at the Café Majesticto have a taste of the belle époque, with its elegant and refined furniture.

This chaotic and lively street creates quite a contrast with the quiet nightlife of the nearby Praça da Batalha.

Traditionally a meeting point for the youngest people, this area is full of cafés, cinemas and the Teatro São João. From Praça da Batalha a string of lanes starts, with numerous tascas which are always very crowded, despite their decadent aspect

From the square, proceeding into Rua de Augusto Rosa you get to Largo 1° de Dezembro, where the church Santa Clara stands.
