Praça do Infante Dom Henriquea - Porto

Praça do Infante Dom Henriquea Hotel Porto

South of the sud del Old Town and in proximity of the river lies Praça do Infante, which owes its name to Henry the Navigator.
Its statue is placed in the middle of the square, representing him with the finger pointed toward the river and the far horizons. The square is dominated on north by the market Ferreira Borges, a beautiful 19th century iron construction painted in red, which hosts today art exhibitions and trade fairs.

On the west side lies the Palácio da Bolsa (the Stock Exchange), in neoclassical style. Started in the first half of the 19th century and terminated in 1910, the Palace is a testimony of the historic commercial power of Porto. A guided visit will reveal the pompous halls in refined furniture, among which stand out the Patio das Naçoes and the Salão árabe, . This last one in particular is in neo Moorish style, with 16 columns, rich gold plated decorations and an iron baluster.

Next to thealácio da Bolsa lies the Igreja de São Francisco, overlooking the river. The austere gothic of the outside hides the exuberant rococo style of the inside. The church construction began in 1245, and went on until 1425. The entire surface of the church is decorated with carved golden wood (500 kg of gold also cover the vaults, altars and pillars!), representing cherubs, vine grapes, birds and other animals. The numerous additions in baroque style were considered excessive, so the clerical authority prohibited the celebration of any religious function. Many sacred representations show a strong taste for macabre. The worthiest element is thealtar panel in high relieve which is placed left of the nave. It was made by two unknown artisans, Felipe da Silva and Antonio Gomes. The panel represents 12 kings of Judea among the branches of a tree coming out from Christ’s body, with the Virgin and the Son. Just opposite the church lies the monastery, which hosts a small museum dedicated to religious iconography and some catacombs.
