About 500 mt from Praça da Libertade lies Praça de Gomes Teixeira.
The two churches, Igreja dos Carmelitas and Igreja do Carmo, present another explosion of azulejos and baroque style. The blue color of the tiles makes a contrast with the golden columns, altars and statues, for a stunning 400 kg of golden decorations!

If you want to visit something original, stop by at the most famous library in Porto: the Livraria Lello e Irmao, 144 Rua dos Carmelitas: the library is hosted inside a bizarre neo gothic building, with the colored roof dating from 1906, which has been declared a national heritage.

Praça Teixeira is the university district, therefore the whole area offers the best tascas in Porto, serving raw and cheap dishes. But this is also a very green district, with palm-trees, flower-beds and a romantic garden, Jardim João Chagas, also called Cordoaria: the best period to visit it is between November and June, when 100 different qualities of camellias are in bloom.
South of the garden lie the massive walls of the Centro Português da Fotografia a building which was used in the past as prison and seat of the Court. Descending down toward the Ribeira you will meet a maze of decadent lanes, which once made up the judiaria, the old Jewish ghetto.
