Rather than a square , this is a huge open place, with the tower del Paços do Concelho,(Town Hall) overlooking it on one side, and the effective square on the other side. In the middle of the square lies the statue of Pedro IV.
TheAvenida dos Aliadosis a large avenue both for vehicles and pedestrians, built at the beginning of the 20th century and surrounded by monumental buildings in liberty style.

The square lies just behind the Paços do Concelho la Igreja da Trindadee, with its severe granite façade resembling the architecture of the Town Hall.

South of the square, on the east side of the statue, lies the Igreja dos Congregados, with the façade decorated with azulejos. Just a few meters on the Avenida de Dom Afonso Henriques you will meet the railway station Estação de São Bento: the hall is entirely tiled with modern azulejos dating from the ‘30s, which represent scenes of battles and ordinary life.
