The museum was founded in 1833 by Pedro IV, with the purpose to preserve the artistic heritage coming from the convents which were closing down, and at the same time to encourage the interest of people toward culture.
Afterwards the museum was given the name of the great Portuguese sculptor António Soares dos Reis, whose works are exhibited inside the museum self.

Since 1940 the museum is hosted inside the Palácio dos Carrancas (XVIII century), once the Royal Residence. Recently the palace has been subject to a substantial restoration and enlargement, coordinated by Fernando Távora who maintained the historical characteristics, though providing the building with new and functional inner and outer spaces.
The most interesting exhibition is the one dedicated to decorative arts. Very remarkable are the Vista Alegreporcelains and the Bohemien Crystals, but also the collection of oriental objectsas well as some ancient jewels dating from the Iron Age.
