Climbing up the hill west of Praça da Libertade you meet the church dos Clérigos, with the Tower standingabove, probably the second most famous monument in Porto after the Ribeira.
Both the church and tower were made by the Italian architect Nicola Nasoni , one of the major interpreters of the Portuguese baroque, who moved to Portugal in 1729. Nasoni was also the author of the Loggia de Sé, the church of Misericórdia, the Freixo Palace and the quintas Ramalde and Prelada.
It is absolutely worth to climb the 225 steps leading to the tower, which is 76 mt high: the panorama from above is superb, with a full view over the city, the river bank and its mouth. For centuries the Tower has represented the highest building of the city, and its construction was so hard, that no other buildings followed for a long time.
