The Fundaçao Serralves was founded in 1989, following an agreement between the Portuguese government and a group of private people, who shared the common desire to bring contemporary art to common people, and to draw the environmental issues to public attention.
The complex is a huge lively art centre. The nucleon is constituted by the Casa Serralves, the National museum for contemporary art and the surrounding Park .
Casa Serralves, bought by the State in 1986, was built in 1940 by the textile entrepreneur Carlos Alberto Cobra, who took inspiration from the most modern architecture tendencies of the age, combining art deco elements and essential Bauhaus style. Some of the major artists of the age took part in the project, like the decorator Edgar Brandt, the glassmaker René Lalique, and Emile Jacques. The house was used as a centre for contemporary art exhibitions, with retrospectives by world renowned artists.
The surrounding park covers a surface of 18 hectares, including lawns, siepi, a lovely lake, fountains, a rose plantation and a botanic garden. An open air museum of sculpture is also stage in the park, as well as the headquarter of the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea, built at the end of the ‘90s on a project of the greatest living Portuguese architect: Âlvaro Siza Vieira. Inaugurated in year 2000, this big white minimalist structure hosts temporary art exhibitions, a permanent exhibition of Portuguese and foreign artists from 1960 to present days, a library and a auditorium where concerts and performances are held.
