In 1996 the medieval Old Town was declared a World Protected Heritage by Unesco.
Since then, a massive recovery and restoration plan began , and there are still many works in progress, as demonstrated by the numerous scaffoldings wrapping up churches and monuments. This is the price to pay to bring the old districts back to their past splendor.
