
The former prison Cadeia da Relação,which hosts inside the Portuguese Centre of photography, was restored and converted to the new use in 1997.
The museum was created with the purpose to promote and enhance the valorization of the Portuguese photography heritage., The centre includes other activities like advertising and filing of the photographic material.

The museum has a yearly program of temporary exhibitions, and hosts a permanent museum with consultation and reproduction facilities, a shop and a free service of guided visits. Reservation is required.
