Vila Nova de Gaia can be easily reached on foot from the Ribeira, walking on the lower level of the bridge Dom Luis I. Alternatively one can cross the upper level of the bridge until the hill of Vila nova, with the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar lying above. .

A visit of the Porto cellars is unmissable!
The choice is not easy, since there are nearly 60 cellars, concentrated between the river and the hill.
If you have more days available we recommend a full tour, to have a taste of all the wine qualities. Ideally you should visit two, maximum 3 cellars at a time , in order to better appreciate the different typologies exhibited.
The offfer of tours varies from cellar to cellar: many cellars offer free tasting, as well as a free guided visits, whereas others require an entry ticket around 4-5 Euro, which includes some wine tasting and a 20% discount on the purchase of a bottle. The smallest wine producers are recommendable for your purchases: they don’t have an export market, therefore prices are generally cheaper.
Here are a few sites where you can find useful information on cellars:
The websites above do not mention the smallest cellars, less commercial, but often with the best qualities of wine. We suggest you to make your own tour and ask advice to the locals.
If you travel with a low cost flight, remember that you can take only one bottle of Porto in the cabin with you.
