Enchanting Byzantine city lying on a hill that stands in a plain on the border of Mount Taigeto and Mani region.
It is a ghost town in a beautiful landscape worth a relaxing walk out of time. The period from April to June, when nature is thriving, is especially advisable.
Mistras site is definitely a must in your visit to Peloponnese. I would advise you to reach the citadel while the air is still fresh and then make the path downhill. Admire the Mitropoli and its small museum, the adjacent church of Evangelistrìa, the Church of Aghia Sofia and several monasteries including the one in Vrontohiòn.
A good starting point for visiting Mistras is the town of Githio, located right on the coast. The village is nice and lively and it features a beautiful sandy beach quite windy, in fact it’s a popular destination for surfers.
From Ghitio you can also ferry to Crete (landing in Kastelli, in the north-western extremity of the island) and to the romantic island of Kithira.
