Welcome to Peloponnese!

Peloponnese is the southern part of mainland Greece and technically it could be considered an island due to the Corinth Canal, built in 1893. The other connection with the rest of Greece is located in Rio
(north-east, near Patras) where a modern bridge to Antirio was built in 2004.

Peloponneso

The Mycenaean civilization was born here (XV - XI century BC) and then it was wiped out and replaced by the Minoans that originally came from Crete. This is the region of Greece where the majority of the most visited ancient sites are preserved. It is well known to everyone that the West society has had its roots in ancient Greece and this is one of the first things we study at school; being able to admire in person places so important to the history of humanity, however, is another emotion.

Among its classic past and the present time of beaches, ouzo and sirtaki that echoes from taverns, the Peloponnese has had a long history written by princes and travellers, by the awkward presence of Venice, and by the splendours of the Byzantine civilization. This is a long history to this lesser known region, and it is dear to classical art historians and cordially hated by the students of classical studies.

In the Middle Ages, Franks descended here and later Turks and Venetians imposed their domination over this area. Its inhabitants have been almost forgotten and lost among the rocks of hard and desert relieves, castles, and fortresses of the Peloponnese, and they are the last witnesses of a long Middle Ages that ended in the 14th century with the Ottoman conquest of the whole Greece.

Vathia, Mani, Peloponneso

For today’s Greeks this is mainly the region that first, in 1821, rebelled to the Ottoman yoke and where several villages compete for the honour of having triggered the riot.

Its main cities, Patras, Kalamata and Tripoli, do not feature anything particularly interesting. The best areas are the two western peninsulas, especially for those looking for beautiful seaside.

The Peloponnese definitely offers everything to curious tourists and gives the feeling of being deep in the heart of Greece.
