Situated in piazza della Scala, the Opera Theatre La Scala is one of the most important theatres in Europe.
In the middle of the square stands the statue of Leonardo da Vinci, a master of the arts and sciences, while opposite the gallery Vittorio Emanuele lies the Italian Commercial Bank.
The Scala theatre was built upon the will of Maria Teresa d’Austria, after a terrible fire had completely destroyed the Royal Theatre of the city.
The Scala was inaugurated in 1778, and enjoyed immediately a great success among the audience. Unfortunately, it suffered severe damages during the two world wars, but it was restored with much care and refinement, and today, the theatre has gained back its splendour, offering a frequent calendar of high level performances.
