Welcome to Milan!

Milano

Milan is a city full of charm, where the ancient and the modern perfectly coexist.

Founded by the population of the Insubri in the 6th century b.c., its original name was "“medhelan”, which means centre of perfection, or sacred earth of the middle; then changed into Mediolanum, and finally Milano.

Situated in a favourable area in north Italy, in the past Milan has been a city of waters, thanks to its numerous canals called Navigli, the majority of which is now covered.
But if you walk along the banks of the few ones still open, in the area of Porta Ticinese, you will have the feeling of a little Venice.

During the centuries, Milan witnessed the passage of the most important historic characters, from Leonardo Da Vinci, who stayed here for a long time and painted the famous fresco “Cenacolo" (an unmissable work of art situated in the city centre), to the family of Sforza, with their Castle, another work of art not to miss in the city centre.

Today Milan appears as a chaotic metropolis with no time to waste; the vital heart of Italian economy and industry, while keeping untouched the beauty and originality of a unique city centre.

Milan is the seat of the Italian stock exchange and of important international manufacturing industries, which make it one of the most active European cities.

A lively city under all points of view, it is served by a wide and efficient network of public transports, including underground, tram (some of which are very old) and buses.
Due to its strong international and economic nature, Milan has been chosen as the seat of the next World Wide Exhibition of 2015. The city in fact will be hosting the Expo 2015, a very important international event taking place every some years in the most important world capitals.
