Just outside the wall of the city it is possible to admire the beautiful Roman theatre, raised toward the end of the 1st century b.c.. At that time in fact, the districts of the artisans, tradesmen and aristocrats were still situated down in the valley, and it was only with the Barbarians’ invasion that they were forced to move on the hills.
The theatre sized a diameter of 70 mt in the cavea and 105 mt on the outer ring, with a total height of 13 mt. it is made up of calcareous blocks coming from the caves of the Apennines, and was embellished with marble slabs, ornaments, frames, columns and mosaics. The stage scene included three niches, with a total capacity of 12000 spectators.
Yet during the imperial age the Iguvium family decayed, and the complex was left abandoned. Then, in the medieval age, the materials were often sacked to build other structures. Today the placee represents a very suggestive frame for theatre representations.
