Church and convent of Saint Ubaldo

This is the most beloved church for the citizens of Gubbio, A basilica which guards the city. At the beginning there was only the church of Saint Gervasio, then an oratory was added in the 12th century, and in 1194 the remains of the Saint were brought here.
The cult of Saint Ubaldo and the continuous pilgrimages brought the monks to build a church, which incorporated the church of Saint Gervasio. Works on the convent started in 1512.
To enter the church you must pass through a beautiful cloister, built in bricked pillars. The basilica has 5 naves, and above the refined marble altar, inside a urn , lies the Body of the Saint, while in the lateral nave are kept the famous wax candles. The basilica can be reached by car or by cableway. the cableway has been in use since 1960, and was inaugurated in occasion of the centenary of Saint Ubaldo’s death. It covers a length of 650 m, allowing visitors to enjoy a wonderful view.
