Piazza Grande represents the core and the historical heart of Gubbio, ideally connecting the four districts of the city: started in 1138, it was only completed in 1438; from its terrace the visitor can enjoy a wonderful view over the city, and the most meaningful buildings of Gubbio overlook it.
One of these buildings is the symbol of the city: Palazzo dei Consoli (Councils Palace), which towers over the square with its elegant bulk. It saw the light in year 1332; in 1341 the second floor was already completed, while it was only in 1389 that the Tower was constructed. The parapet which delimits the terrace was replaced by a long loggia, raised in 1508 and pulled down in 1839. The image of Gubbio has become more familiar to the Italian audience, since the city has been chosen as the set of a popular TV serial.
The Peoples’ Palace, erroneously called the Council’s Palace, was the seat of the local Parliament during the medieval age. The façade, decorated with the portal and the flight of steps, is subdivided into more parts by pilasters, and embellished with two mullion windows of great value. In the upper part there are six windows, culminating, finally, with an elegant battlement.
The bell-tower is situated on the left corner, and hosts the “campanone”(great bell), which bears a special meaning for the people. Today the bell chimes 61 times per year, and each time a real ritual takes place, with the representatives of the bell-ringers congregation dressed in grey and red suit.
From the main entrance visitors access directly the Major Room, called the Arengo: once this was the place where the assembly of the representatives of Gubbio used to convene. The room is full of archaeological rests of many ages.
Inside the Cuncil’s Palace the famous “Tavole Eugubine”(Tables) are kept, a fundamental testimony of the ancient history of the Umbrian population. These tables consist of brass boards, dating back to the period between 200 and 70 b.c.
Some tables are carved with characters of Etruscan influence, some others with letters of the Latin alphabet. The tables are of fundamental importance, and they represent a great support for the study of the Umbrian populations, also because they contain the description of the religious ceremonies, something never seen elsewhere with Latin and Greek.
Inside the palace it is also possible to visit the Room of ceramic and the municipal art gallery.
