This fascinating square is faced by the Bargello Palace, a building raised in the 14th century, which maintained the charm of the medieval style untouched, with its two entrances, a small and abigger one, and the façade with big acute arch windows. The first of the two entrances is called “the door of the dead”, and lies 60-80 cm from the floor. once it used to lead directly to the upper floor by means of a steep staircase, and this is the reason why it was used in case of funerals. The bigger entrance led directly to the bottom of the building. The bottom was only open in case of rental, while, if the owner decided to occupy the whole building alone, the little door was closed and the bigger one remained the only entrance. There is a font on the square which was used to supply water in this part of the city. In the 17th century the ancient font was turned into a fountain and moved in the middle of the square. The fountain shows a big cup, which served to water the animals. According to an old popular story, if you turn around the fountains three times you’ll get the licence of “mad”, after being wet with some of the water coming from the fountain.
