These two palaces face the Great Square: Palazzo Ranghiasci is situated on the longest side of the square, and shows a huge neoclassical façade, with three elegant avancorpi. It was designed by the Marquis Francesco Ranghiasci, a lover of antiquities, who used it to keep an important art collection.
The Palace of the Podestà lies opposite the Cuncil's Palace, on the other side of the square. It was started between 1348 and 1349, with the purpose to create a twin building for the Council’s palace, but the works done in 1475 completely turned the original project upside down. The original building was preceded by a loggia supported by columns. one of these columns was used to chain those who committed crimes against shops and their products.
Inside the palace, which today hosts the seat of the municipality, there are huge rooms with bricked cross vaults, converging into a single octagonal pillar.
The section underneath hosts the State Archives, with ancient codes and documents coming form the monasteries of the surroundings.
