Palazzo Ducale of Gubbio

This palace was the residence of the Montefeltro family, who ruled Gubbio for a long time. It was built between 1476 and 1480 for the will of Federico da Montefeltro on pre-existing foundations. To get there, you must go through via Ducale, the street where the Palace of the Canonici is situated. A visit of this palace is also worth it. If you go down the cellar , a huge barrel is still visible, bearing a capacity of 20.000 litres! The Duke Palace is in renaissance style, but it lost most of its precious value. The great halls are embellished with important ornaments and decorations, but they suffered severe losses since many of these decorations were taken away to increase private collections and foreign museums (the study room of the Duke of Montefeltro for instance is hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of New York). The trapezoidal courtyard is situated just after the entry door, on which sides is placed an elegant porch, supported by columns with refined capitals. Today the palace is the seat of a museum, and exhibitions are often held inside.
