Steady events in Gubbio
The Ceri race (or Race of the wax candles): This is an extremely important event for the Eugubini community. The most probable theory behind it, is that the event was born with a religious matrix.
The veneration of Saint Ubaldo, bishop of Gubbio, was realized through a procession, with a wooden soul covered with wax: this ritual was followed from the half of the 12th century until the end of the 16th century, when the ceremony, once exclusively religious, was also turned into a profane competition, though maintaining the original idea of the wax candle (Ceri).
A special kind of wax candles were designed, which could be easily carried by the people belonging to a same Corporation. On top of the wax candles were mounted the statues of the protectors of each Corporation: Saint Antonio for the mule keepers and the farmers; Saint George for the artisans and tradesmen, Saint Ubaldo for the workers and the stone-cutters.
Every year since centuries, on the15 maggio, the famous “race of the wax candles” takes place. During the race, the wax candles are carried on shoulders by the candle holders through the tortuous streets of the city, up to the Basilica of Saint Ubaldo. The manifestation begins at 10.00 o’clock with the parade of the Ceri from Saint Lucia to the main square, and at 12.00 the wax candles are lifted up, accompanied by the launch of the water jugs (a propitious ritual). Finally, at 6 o’clock in the afternoon the bishop gives its benediction, and the race can begin.
