Gubbio Cathedral
The old cathedral was originally supposed to lie much further than the place where it is today. But we only have rare references testifying this original position. The cathedral as we see it today dates back to the 12th century, and shows a very simple and linear façade. The big circular window placed on the gothic portal at the entrance is surrounded by the Four Evangelists and Christ, with the last one in dominant position. the inside of the cathedral is mammoth, with ten bi arches supporting the roof. the church is dedicated to Saint James and Saint Mariano, the first martyrs of Christianity. On the Great Altar, inside a roman sarcophagus, the relics of the two Saints are kept.
The lateral chapels host numerous art works, and the Museum keeps some important frescos, paintings, statues and precious sacred ornaments.
