Zagreb is the biggest city of Croatia, and its political, economic and cultural capital.

The first impact with this city usually leaves the visitor cold, but to appreciate Zagreb you have to walk in the old town, rich of 19th century buildings with beautiful façades, reminding of those in Budapest and Vienna; or meet some street concerts in Trg Petra Preradovica, or visit one of the many interesting museums, like the Mimara museum or the art gallery.

As soon as you arrive into town, get a free map of the City Walks in one of the tourist offices, and follow the two main itineraries indicated. The second itinerary winds through the Upper city, which is also the most ancient part of Zagreb, rich of churches and building dating back to the early centuries of the city history, like the Assumption Cathedral dedicated to the Virgin, the Archbishop’s Palace, the picturesque vegetable market of Dolac, the Stone Gate, the Bano Palace, the Naïve Art Gallery and much more.

Not to miss is the romantic oasis of the park Maksimir, where you can take a pleasant promenade along the green avenues surrounded by artificial lakes, or visit Medvedgrad fortress, the most important medieval monument of Zagreb, with its impressive defense-walls, the ancient towers, the little chapel and the Altar, which was raised in honor of all the people who fought and died for Croatia’s liberty.
