Split - Croatia

Spalato

Split is Croatia’s second biggest city, and it represents the heart of Dalmatia. The old town developed around the port, which is one of the major departing points for the numerous islands opposite the coast, some of which are also among the most visited of the country: Hvar, Vis and Brac.

Beside the visit of the old town, both the Archeological Museum and the Mestrovic Gallery are worth to be seen, if only to admire the sculptures by Ivan Mestrovice, one of the most important modern sculptors. After visiting the Kastelet fortress, absolutely not to miss is the Diocletian Palace, overlooking the port.

The Palace was built between 295 and 305 AC, upon the order of Emperor Diocletian, who wanted the palace to be the place of his retirement after his abdication. Successively the palace continued to be used for years as a retirement place for kings. It was modified various times during the middle age, but these touches have only made the ancient site more fascinating.

The structure was entirely built with the famous and precious white stone extracted on the island of Brac, and with no regard to the expenses, the Emperor also ordered the most precious marbles from Italy, as well as sphinxes from Egypt.

The Palace occupies a length of 215 mt from east to west, with a maximum height of 181 mt, for a total surface of 31.000 square meters, while the walls are up to 26 meters high.

The Palace currently hosts a museum and more than 200 inhabited buildings, shops, cafés and restaurants.

Inside you can admire the statue of the Bishop Gregorio, the Arnir Chapel, the Golden Gate, the Civic Museum, Jove Temple, the Cathedral of St. Domnis and the fascinating subterranean rooms.
