Island Brac - Croatia

Brac is one of the largest islands of central Dalmatia, rich of pine-woods and steep cliffs, with a sunny, hot and dry climate which make it in summer the ideal place for a holiday. The inner landscape is characterised by piles of stones picked-up by women over the centuries, in order to free the ground and permit cultivation. And it was thanks to these efforts that on the island today wine, olive oil, almonds, figs and cherries can be produced. But the main source of export is represented by construction stones, which are extracted on the island and sold all over the world. Two illustrious examples of this ancient activity are the Diocletian Palace of Split and even the White House in Washington. There are two main tourist centres on the coast, Supetar and Bol, and especially this last one is a good example of tourism integrated with the environment. The majority of hotels, in fact, is immersed in the green of the pine-wood which stretches west of the town centre and very close to the gorgeous beach Zlatni Rat, outstretched for 500 meters toward the sea. The tongue-shaped beach is characterised by white pebbled stones, with the tongue tip changing direction according to the wind and waves. The pine-wood offers a pleasant shelter from the sun, and together with the rocks which lie closed behind the beach, makes Zlatni Rat one of the finest places in Dalmatia.
