The Love Path is a suggestive tourist path renowned all over the world, which was elected a world protected heritage by Unesco.
This narrow path clinging over the sea has been excavated in the rocks. It connects Riomaggiore and Manarola.
This trail, whose name derives from the modern habit of thousands of couple to walk down the path hand in hand, has actually a more practical origin: it was in fact used as footpath to deposit the explosive necessary for the construction of the railway in a secured place, far from the two villages.
This is how the two narrow paths were excavated, one from Manarola and the other from Riomaggiore, in order to reach the deposit.
Once the construction of the railway ended and the deposit was dismantled, the local people realized that the path could be of great use, since it permitted to connect the two villages in short time.
Two groups of volunteers were created, who completed the construction. Lately, after the path was discovered by tourists, because of its incredible romanticism, it was called the Love Path.
