Corniglia

Coniglia has Roman origins. Its name seems to derive from Corneliu, the name of a rich Roman citizen who owned some lands in the territory. This theory is confirmed by some amphoras for wine which were found in Pompei, where the name Cornilia appears.
The village is situated on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea, from where it is possible to admire all the other 4 villages of the Cinque Terre. Cornilia Le Cinque terre

To get there, you must climb the “Lardarina”, a long and steep brick staircase made of 33 flights and 377 steps, or, alternatively, you can walk all the way from the railway to the village.

The houses of Corniglia wind along Via Feschi, looking over the street on one side, and the sea on the other side. On top of a small relief lies the church of Saint Peter, one of the most interesting sacred buildings of the area of Cinque Terre. Built in 1334, the church is in gothic style. The white rose window standing out of the façade is made of the famous marble of Carrara. It’s a work by Marco and Pietro di Campiglia. The portal is also remarkable, with little columns and marble mouldings.
