Welcome to Bergamo!

Still undiscovered by mass tourism, and too often ignored by the main tourist operators, the town of Bergamo is a destination of great interest for the most careful visitor, who will be charmed by the peculiarity of this city built on two levels: the lower part called Bergamo Bassa (Berghem de sota), modern and dynamic, though not too frenetic; a man-sized town characterized by large alleys surrounded by flower-beds in bloom and massive fountains. And the upper part called Bergamo Alta (Berghem de sora), a real artistic jewel, situated on top of one of the seven hills making up the territory.

Hotel a Bergamo

Tourist fond of art and culture may stay in town for a whole weekend, walking around the lanes and the small squares, admiring medieval buildings or visiting museums; while the tourist in transit at the airport Orio al Serio will certainly enjoy spending here a couple of hours in between flights, taking some pictures or doing shopping. And all the nature lovers headed to the Orobic prealps, may also enjoy a half-day visit of Bergamo, before proceeding their journey. The best way to visit the upper part is accessing the city centre through a charming path on the funicular, which departs from the lower town. Piazza Vecchia is the heart of Upper Bergamo. Here it is possible to admire the Palace of Law (Palazzo della Ragione) and the City Tower. Right behind stands the Dome, with the renaissance chapel of Colleoni, realised as a funeral chapel in honour of Bartolomeo Colleoni. Walking down the little streets of the historical centre (entirely converted into pedestrian area), and admiring the shops (open almost every day, Sunday included) you finally get to the castle…. with a refreshing break in the Park of Remembrances. After you covered the complete perimeter of the town walls (passing by Colle Aperto, where you can enjoy a beautiful view over the city) it is possible to return to the Market Square, and take the funicular back down to Lower Bergamo. At this point you can choose whether to stop for dinner and stay overnight in town, or to continue your journey toward the naturalistic itinerary of the Seriana or Brembana valley, or -why not?- continue your holiday on the mountains.
