Rocca Maggiore in Assisi

This wonderful fortress is said to have hosted, among many,  Federico Barbarossa and a young Federico II.

The fortress towers over Assisi and the whole valley, and the view from here is superb. It was built on the ruins of an ancient Etruscan site, destroyed in the 12th century, then built again in the 14th century by the Cardinal Albornoz , who left the original plan unaltered, and lately added the Rocca Minore.
In 1458 further enlargement works started, with the construction of the polygonal tower, connected to the Rocca Maggiore through a fortressed passage.
Both fortresses are located on the highest points of the town, and are linked with each other through a long wall, which is said to hide a secret path.
