The Town Square represents the heart of Assisi, having witnessed, in the course of the centuries, the social, cultural and political life of the city. It is located on the ancient area of the Roman forum, with the Priors’ Palace, the 13th century Captain Palace and the Temple of Minerva overlooking it.
The Temple dates back to the 1st century B.C., and shows an elegant façade with an eardrum and six columns with Corinthian capitals. The Temple, dedicated to the Roman goddess Minerva, was turned into a Christian church, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, and rearranged with a baroque touch during the 17th century.
Opposite the temple, the Volta Pinta is visible, with grotesque paintings made by Raffaellino del Colle in the 16th century. In the middle of the square also lies the beautiful fountain built by Giovanni Martinucci in 1762.
