Both buildings overlook the Town Square.
The Captain Palace was built in 1282, and represented the heart of the town’s medieval life. The Captain, the commander of the city army, had his office here. Toward the end of the 14th century it became residence of the Podestà, that is, the Pope’s vicar. Only later it was used for other purposes.
The façade is made up of three floors, with four windows and four doors on each floor, and a beautiful battlement on top. On the façade are still visible, carved in the wall, the measures for silk, linen and wool.
Beside the building lies the People’s tower, built in various ages starting from the second half of the 13th century. It shows a square plant and has been the head office of the Land Registry and the Notaries.
The clock on the façade was put on in the first half of the 15th century and in 1926 the Bell of Lauds was added, with the engraving “Canticle of the Creatures”.
Today, the Captain’s Palace hosts the International Society of Franciscan Studies.
The Prior’s Palace was built in the 14th century from the union of four pre-existing buildings, and in the past has hosted the old Magistracy.
Today, it is the seat of the Town Hall and the Municipal Art Gallery.
It was also used as residence by the Priors.
