The Hermitage is situated 4 km far from the town, on the slopes of Mount Subasio, in the middle of a wonderful evergreen oak wood.
The primitive building was constituted by a chapel surrounded by various caves, and this was the place where Saint Francis and his followers used to come praying.
In the 15th century Saint Bernardino built a small convent and the church of S.ta Maria delle Carceri, which conglobates the primitive chapel.
Close to it, it is possible to visit the cave with the stone couch where Francis used to rest, while, at the end of the wood, lies the great evergreen oak where tradition has it that some birds perched to listen to the Saint’s words.
