Welcome to Assisi!

The town of Assisi lies on the slopes of Mount Subasio, above the valley where the rivers Topino and Chiascio run through.

The town has Roman origins, but the urban aspect and the buildings as we know them today were shaped during the medieval age. The oldest centre, in fact, is protected by a wall belt with 8 doors and two watching fortresses, the Rocca Maggiore and Rocca Minore.

Basilica di Assisi

During the medieval age Assisi was Ghibelline, and was defeated in the battle of Collestrada by its antagonist Perugia. In this battle two representatives of the bourgeoisie were arrested: “Francesco” and “Mona Pica”. Francesco was soon released, and completely changed his life by founding the Franciscan Order, while Chiara dedicated her life to the spreading the Order rules among women.

Assisi is a unique town, which special charm doesn’t come only from the monuments, although they are of inescapable beauty, but also from the atmosphere, which the story and devotion of St. Francis have contributed to make special.
