INTRODUCTION:  « welcome to the ancient Land of liberty »: reads a plate at the entrance of the Republic of San Marino, the oldest Republic of the world and the smallest  State in Europe.

Entry requirements: neither passport nor visa is required for European citizens of the Member States.  A valid identity card is sufficient. Most of European driving licenses are accepted.   
Travelling with pets: small sized pets like cats, dogs and ferrets must travel with animal passport (in force since 2004) and have an identification microchip or tattoo. Also, they must be vaccinated against rabies.  
Health and safety: both private and public health structures are very good. No vaccination is required.
General safety is good, there are no danger zones.

Climate: San Marino is characterised by a temperate Mediterranean climate, with very hot summers and not too cold winters.

Economy: the main activities of the Republic are manufacture, mechanics, transports, services, building, bank system, finance, pottery and telecommunications. The main agricultural products are fruit, vegetables, wine and cheese.

Posts, banks and telephone:  post offices are open Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 18 pm, Saturday  until 12.30 pm. Banks are open from 8.30 am to 13.20 pm  and from 14.45 to 15.55 pm Monday to Friday.
