INTRODUCTION: the Republic of Macedonia (Република Македониjа, or FYROM –former Republic of Yugoslavia in Macedonia) is situated in south-eastern Europe. The Country is a perfect blend of different cultures and religions. The wounds of a recent past and the poverty and social tensions deriving from it are still evident. Though it cannot be yet considered as a tourist destination, the Country certainly deserves a visit.

Religion: Christian-Orthodox and Muslim.
Entry requirements: neither a passport nor visa is required for European citizens of the Member States. A valid identity card with a minimum validity of 3 months is sufficient. Citizens of the UE must register at a police station if they are not staying in a hotel. Most of European driving licenses are accepted, but the Green Card is required.
Travelling with pets: small sized pets like cats, dogs and ferrets must travel with animal passport (in force since 2004) and have an identification microchip or tattoo.
Health and safety: both private and public health structures are poor. No vaccination is required, but it is advisable to drink only bottled mineral water and eat pre-cooked food.
General safety in the country is unsteady due to long-existing inner tensions. The utmost care is necessary when travelling along the borders.
Climate: Macedonia has a continental climate with very hot summers and relatively cold winters, which are made milder by the warm winds blowing from the Aegean sea. Snowfalls are common.

Economy: Macedonian economy is sufficiently developed, and it is mainly focused on the search of potential foreign investors to increase the current level of employment. The industrial sector represents more than 30% of the per capita income. Key sectors are coal, chrome, lead, nickel, textile, wood, tobacco. Agriculture employs a considerable portion of the population. The main cultivations are tobacco, wheat, corn, cotton, sesame, citrus fruits, vegetables, but the main support to the economy comes from the tertiary sector.
Electricity: voltage: 220 V, frequency 50 Hz. Both the European two-poles plug and the German type are in use. It is always advisable to bring plug adapters.
Post offices, banks and telephones: post offices are open Monday to Friday from 8 am to 20 pm, or 9-17. Banks are generally open Monday to Friday from 7.00 am to 19 pm. Some are also open on Saturday from 7 am to 13 pm.
